A real drumline program. Every Saturday. In your neighborhood.

The BK Steppers Drumline Academy is where young people in Brooklyn come to learn marching percussion — the tradition of HBCU show-style and drum corps drumming that BK Steppers has stewarded for 37 years.

Students who walk in on their first Saturday might have never touched a drum before. Students who’ve been coming for years earn spots in the BK Steppers Drumline and go on to perform publicly. The Academy is the front door to a pathway that has produced professional performers, HBCU marching band leaders, touring musicians, and orchestral artists.

Every Saturday, at PS 139 in Brooklyn. Free. Open enrollment. No audition. Show up ready to learn.

The fundamentals. Done right.

Every Saturday session builds toward marching percussion excellence. The curriculum is structured to meet students where they are and move them forward.

Rudiments & Technique
The foundational vocabulary of marching percussion — stick control, single and double strokes, rolls, flams, and paradiddles.
Ensemble Playing
Listening, counting, keeping time with the group, section coordination, and the discipline of playing together as one drumline.
Cultural Tradition
The HBCU show-style and drum corps traditions that shape how BK Steppers plays — not as a template, but as living cultural context.
Reading Music
Basic percussion notation, chart reading, and the ability to learn new repertoire from the page — skills that transfer across musical settings.
Performance Skills
Posture, stage presence, marching fundamentals, and the confidence to perform in front of audiences — not just in rehearsal.
Discipline & Focus
The habits that music develops — sustained attention, showing up on time, working hard on hard things, taking pride in improvement.

The Academy is where the pathway starts.

Enrolling in the BK Steppers Drumline Academy isn’t just signing up for a music class. It’s stepping onto a pathway that has taken students from their first practice pad to some of the biggest stages in professional performance.

From first beat to professional career.
Students who love drumline don’t hit a dead end at the Academy. They can advance to the BK Steppers Drumline for public performance, prepare for HBCU marching band, drum corps, and college music auditions, and see themselves in the alumni working professionally today with productions like STOMP, Disneyland, and HBCU percussion programs.
37 years and counting.
BK Steppers has been building this pathway since 1989. The Academy is where the next generation of that tradition begins — and where your child gets a seat at the table.

Ages 6 to 24. The Academy welcomes children as young as 6 who are ready to sit and focus, and young adults up to age 24 who want to keep developing.

Sessions are structured so students of different ages and levels can work together productively — like a real drumline.

The Academy is free because donors keep it that way.

Every child who enrolls does so at no cost to their family. That’s possible because supporters believe every young person in Brooklyn deserves access to marching percussion excellence. If you’re able to help sustain the tradition, we’d be grateful.
